From River Town to Growing Suburb

Shakopee started as a trading post and river town; it's named for Chief Shakopee II of the Mdewakanton Dakota, who had a village near the river. For most of its history it was a small, somewhat isolated community. By the 1960s, its economy was tied to the growing metro, and Wikipedia notes that the biggest wave of growth as a bedroom community followed the 1996 realignment of Highway 169 toward the new Bloomington Ferry Bridge.
