Cabins Turned Year-Round Homes

White Bear Lake began as a summer getaway. The railroad from St. Paul reached the lake in 1868, and in the years after, cottages and resort hotels went up along the shore. Over time, many of those seasonal places became permanent homes. Today the city's streets include older bungalows and cottages close to downtown and the lake, midcentury houses, and newer townhomes and apartments toward Highway 61 and Highway 96.

For a house with that kind of range, size and age are the best guides:

• Older cottages and bungalows are often smaller, with tile and woodwork that benefit from detail time. A two-bedroom, one-bathroom home is $189 for Standard Cleaning, before sales tax.
• Expanded lake houses often add bedrooms and bathrooms. A four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is $299 Standard, or $378 with Deep Cleaning.
• Mudrooms and entries that take the winter beating are included in a normal clean. We'll vacuum and mop entry floors as part of the visit.
• Lower levels are $49 when finished. Garages and unfinished basements aren't included.
